Booking and attending screenings as an LGBTQIA+ patient
NHS screenings are available to all eligible LGBTQIA+ patients, though booking processes vary depending on whether your GP records reflect your gender identity. Screening invitations are generally based on the gender registered with the GP, which may mean trans and non-binary patients do not automatically receive invitations for relevant screenings.
Key Considerations for Booking Screenings:
Cervical Screening (Smear Test):
Trans Men/Non-Binary: If registered as male, you will not receive automatic invitations. You should complete a system connect to ask for an appointment and can ask to be added to a local register for reminders.
Lesbian/Bisexual Women: Eligible if aged 25 to 64.
Trans Women: Generally, do not need a smear test if you do not have a cervix.
Breast Screening:
Offered to anyone registered as female with their GP, aged 50-70. If you are a trans man or non-binary person registered as male, you can contact your GP to request a mammogram or to be included in the screening program.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening:
Offered to men over 65. Trans women may be eligible, but if registered as female, they may not get an automatic invitation, so they should contact their local screening service to arrange a check.
Bowel Screening:
Generally provided to everyone, though sometimes based on gender markers.
HPV Screening:
If you are a lesbian, bisexual, or queer woman, be aware that you have the same risk for HPV as heterosexual women and should attend all invited screenings.
